Course description

This course is a survey of myths from around the world, with an emphasis on literary analysis of the myths. The course covers the urposes and types of myths, the development of myths and mythological characters, the recurring elements of mythological structures, and the influence of mythology on contemporary texts.

Learning goals

  • To read, analyze, and evaluate a selection of primary mythological and folkloric texts from various eras of several cultures.
  • To compare and contrast the changing mythological and folkloric trends within one culture and between different cultures.
  • To examine the relationship between folklore and mythology.
  • To analyze and evaluate the role of mythology and folklore in the contemporary art, literature, and popular icons of a culture.
  • To investigate the depiction of implied social mores and ethical values in the mythology and folklore of a culture.

Requirements

  1. Regular attendance and active participation, plus keeping up-to-date on the reading

  2. Project

  3. Mid-term

  4. Group presentation

  5. 12 quizzes

  6. One 4 – 6 page paper

  7. Final Exam

Grades

90-100%=A, 88-89% = B+, 80-87%=B, 78-79%=C+, 70-77%=C, 60-69%=D (Possible 500 points)

              Midterm & project= 60 points each (total of 120)

              Paper = 100 points

              Quizzes: 10 points each and I drop the lowest (total of 110)

              Group presentation = possible 40

              Class participation, includes participation on Listserv = possible 30

              Final = 100 points

Notes:   You must attend every day during the first two weeks, or I will assume that you have dropped.  If you miss ANY day during the semester, please notify me.

Academic Honesty: Cheating of any kind is not tolerated and could result in being failed or dropped.  Cheating includes talking during quizzes, claiming someone else’s work as your own, copying in any form, or doing anything that compromises your academic integrity.
