Eng. 9ABC: Creative Writing

For as long as I can remember, I've loved making up stories, poems, essays, and plays. I remember writing my first play, "Penelope & the Pirate," in my bedroom with my best friend and putting it on for the neighborhood kids in the backyard.

This fall, join with other writers at Gavilan in the passionate exploration of the word. You'll write a lot, read great writers and see what they have to teach us about writing, and support each other in writing groups--one of the best ways to discover how your work affects other readers. In this course, students will have the opportunity to develop the craft of writing poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and drama. Please see the syllabus for more details, and email me if you have any questions. I look forward to sharing a semester writing (and reading!) together.

“So long as you write what you wish to write, that is all that matters; and whether it matters for ages or only for hours, nobody can say. But to sacrifice a hair of the head of your vision, a shade of its colour, in deference to some Headmaster with a silver pot in his hand or to some professor with a measuring-rod up his sleeve, is the most abject treachery, and the sacrifice of wealth and chastity, which used to be said to be the greatest of human disasters, a mere flea-bite in comparison.”

 —Virginia Woolf
