## ChatGPT and AI Tools Gavilan College TLC Sept 2023 ![hawk sticker](img_gpt/11hawk.png)
## Overview of Today's Talk - Intro and usage. Abilities and limitations - Examples - Detecting AI and suggestions
## Getting Started - You can [try it here](https://chat.openai.com/) (chat.openai.com) - The idea is that you give it a "prompt" ![example espanol](img_gpt/0spain.png)
## Writing - Outline an essay on... - expand these bullet points into paragraphs - condense the following into bullet points... - generate 5 creative titles for my essay on ...
## Feedback and Improvement - Can you make 5 suggestions to improve my writing...? - Rewrite this... and explain why you made each change.
## Translation / Language Learning - Translate sentences - Explain meaning or nuance of words - Ask about differences in countries dialects - just chatting
## Rewriting - Ask it to condense paragraphs into bullet points. - Request for rewriting a given text at different proficiency levels (college, reader's digest, primary level etc.) - Make outlines or summaries from video transcripts
## As a Study Aid - Ask for explanations on topics - Create flashcards or quiz questions - Generate exam questions - And their answers
## And more - engage in a Socratic debate with ChatGPT as a way of thinking through a question and articulating an argument. - GPT is an effective tutor for many subjects. - "Explain why you said that a derivitave is a constant rate of change..."
## In STEM - Take this equation and implement it in Python - Write a web page with 2 columns and images and text in each column.
## Help Instructors? - What activities can I do for Project Based Learning? - Write a lesson plan to teach vector arithmetic
## Capabilities
## Writing Capability - At first: conversational flow of sentences, coherent, unobjectionable writing - But you notice: lackluster writing, needless exposition, and no strong thesis - You can: improve through refined prompts
## Just Ask Again - re-word the question ![clickbait](img_gpt/12click.png)
## Understanding AI - Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (GPT) - Similar to predictive texting on smartphones - Backed by statistics ![neural](img_gpt/10nn.png)
## AI Landscape - Tremendous data processing capacity enables human-like interactions - builds upon (old concepts of) neural networks - spurred mainly by advances in computing power
## Other AI Tools In The Market - Google: Bard - Open source: Llama - Other AI products like Grammarly and Copilot
## In Art - Examples: Mid Journey, Open AI's DALL-E, Adobe Photoshop Generative Fill - User-friendly interfaces where users describe the image they want - Video is improving quickly
## Midjourney 2023 - A kitten dressed as a luchador, wearing a mexican mask, doing a dive bomb wrestling move in a wrestling ring - ![kitten](img_gpt/8cat.png)
## . - Black and white abstract drawing of 6 students, boys and girls, sitting in a line on a bench, looking at mobile phones, line art, thick outlines, in the style of 1950's comic book or coloring book - ![bench](img_gpt/9bench.png)
## Our Response? - Especially this semester & next
## Have a Clear Syllabus - Clear policy on AI in the syllabus - Explain the policy in detail - and adhere to it
## Is It Cheating? - Copying someone else's work ..? - Having a family member edit your work ? - Need to clarify what help is acceptable when using ChatGPT
## When Does it Become Cheating? - If I generate an outline and write my own paragraphs? - If I write my outline and generate paragraphs? - If I ask it to edit and correct my grammar?
## When Does it Become Cheating? - If I ask it for 5 different versions of a sentence I wrote? - If I rewrite GPT generated text in my own words? - If I use GPT to generate a title or headline?
## Sample Policy - Core policy: *Plagiarism* (copying) is unacceptable - Significant "help" gets *acknowledged*
## Citations and Acknowledgements - Cite AI assistance? - Example: "Portions of this document were edited by ChatGPT on [date] [URL] [version]" - Give examples
## Our Advice So Far... - Get familiar with it - Get familiar with your students' writing - Address it in the syllabus
## Detecting - [GPTZero](http://gptzero.me/) - Turnitin: [enabled since 4/23](https://www.turnitin.com/blog/the-launch-of-turnitins-ai-writing-detector-and-the-road-ahead) - and many more in the pipeline
## Big Caveat - Detection should serve as a flag, not as an automatic referral - Is not 100% reliable
## GPTZero - let's give it the 10th amendment ![gpt zero with 10th amendment](img_gpt/1amend.png)
## Turnitin Let's write an essay ![tii essay](img_gpt/2essay.png)
## TII Results There is an *AI* tab ![tii ai](img_gpt/3tii.png)
## TII Detail ![tii detail](img_gpt/4tii.png)
## Rewrite our essay Let's change our essay a tiny bit ![rewrite essay](img_gpt/5essay.png)
## TII Results 2 Hey, not bad! ![essay 2](img_gpt/6essay.png)
## Lessons - Detection is inherently *unreliable*. - What are the steps when you suspect? - False accusations are unfair and demoralizing
## The Challenge for Teachers - This is one of many crises - Faculty may feel that AI and other changes are undermining the profession - It is important to validate these feelings and open a dialogue about these changes
## By Dept ![depts](img_gpt/7depts.jpg)
## Is Resistance Futile? - It is reasonable for some faculty to resist the changes brought about by AI - Anxiety and concerns are high and must not be dismissed - Reminds us of the reluctant adoption of online learning
## A Metaphor? - Like the intro of Wikipedia - Like calculators, but for language - Chegg
## The Future of Teaching - Significant changes such as AI have the potential to rewrite the teaching profession - Big questions and feelings surrounding these changes need to be addressed - Recognition of all points of view as valid.
## Didn't Mention - the very real privacy concerns - algorithmic bias - errors and misinformation - copyright violations
