JPN 1A Elementary Japanese 5.0 units
Description: Beginning course with emphasis on understanding Japanese language; introduction to reading, writing, listening and speaking. This course will also introduce students to Japanese culture and traditions. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass.

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate basic Japanese language oral proficiency.
2. Demonstrate basic writing proficiency in the Japanese language.
3. Demonstrate basic grammar recognition within the Japanese sentence structure.
4. Analyze and describe Japanese culture and customs.


JPN 1B Elementary Japanese 5.0 units
Description: The course continues to build a basic Japanese language skills in speaking, reading, listening and writing. The course also continue to introduce students to Japanese culture and traditions. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass. PREREQUISITE: Japanese 1A or equivalent.

1. Demonstrate more advanced Japanese language oral proficiency.
2. Demonstrate more advanced writing proficiency in the Japanese language.
3. Demonstrate more advanced grammar recognition within the Japanese sentence structure.
4. Analyze and describe Japanese culture, customs and traditions.


JPN 23 Independent Study 1.0 units
Description: Designed to afford selected students specialized opportunities for exploring areas at the independent study level. The course may involve extensive library work, research in the community, or special projects. May by repeated until six units of credit are accrued. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass. REQUIRED: The study outline prepared by the student and the instructor must be filed with the department and the dean.
