Students are introduced to the cultures and customs of various French-speaking countries.Student Learning Outcomes: - Respond to and use basic greetings, courtesy phrases and typical classroom expressions.
- Provide personal information in spoken and written form.
- Pronounce and spell the names of objects, people, places and activities in each of the familiar topic areas.
- Discuss and employ customs of French-speaking countries.
- Ask and answer, in speech or print, yes-no and information questions in the present, near future, and past tenses in topic areas such as self, family, and hobbies.
- Make oral and written statements in the affirmative and negative about their activities in the present, near future, and past tenses.
- Recognize and define cultural differences among the various French-speaking countries.
- Imitate French customs in speech and mannerisms.
FRNH 1B Elementary French 5.0 unitsDescription: Continuation of French 1A with further development of the four skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. Continued emphasis on culture. - Distinguish usage, of imperfect and simple past tenses.
- Evaluate need for use of subjunctive in a sentence.
- Recognize and employ use of the two"to know"verbs.
- Locate and identify French-speaking countries of the world.
- Compare customs among French-speaking countries and the U.S.
FRNH 2A Intermediate French 5.0 unitsDescription: In French 2A, students further develop skills acquired in first year French: they review grammatical structures and expand their vocabulary; they increase their communicative ability through the reading and discussion of excerpts of French literature and cultural texts of various francophone countries and written composition. PREREQUISITE: French 1B or equivalent.Student Learning Outcomes: - Distinguish usage among various tenses and combine them in oral and written communication
- Express ideas and opinions with expanded vocabulary in oral and written communication
- Compare and contrast ideas using comparative and superlative forms in oral and written communication
- Employ present subjunctive mode to convey what must be done and what one wishes to have done in oral and written communication
- Analyze literary excerpts and/or cultural texts orally and in written form
FRNH 2B Intermediate French 5.0 unitsDescription: In French 2B, students further develop skills acquired in French 2A: they review grammatical structures and expand their vocabulary; they increase their communicative ability through the reading and discussion of excerpts of French literature and cultural texts of various francophone countries and written composition. PREREQUISITE: French 2A or equivalent.Student Learning Outcomes: - Understand the history and culture of the French-speaking world.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills in class discussion and written compositions
- Read and interpret works from a range of academic, literary and cultural sources
- Demonstrate mastery of grammatical functions in target language including various verb tenses, comparative and superlative forms, and the present subjunctive.
- Identify cultural assumptions that are implicit in francophone texts that are important to understanding and responding to them
- Analyze, synthesize, evaluate, and question Francophone texts in culturally appropriate ways, with special attention to lines of argument, inference, and cultural context
FRNH 23 Independent Study 1.0 units
Description: Designed to afford selected students specialized opportunities for exploring areas at the independent study level. The courses may involve extensive library work, research in the community, or special projects. May be repeated until six units of credit are accrued. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass. REQUIRED: The study outline prepared by the student and the instructor must be filed with the department and the dean.
