DENT 765 Fundamentals of Dental Assisting 0.0 unitsDescription: This course emphasizes the principles and skills necessary to perform basic dental assisting procedures safely and effectively. Students will learn dental terminology and anatomy, preparing the patient for treatment, assisting the dentist in all procedures, recording of vital signs, sterilizing instruments, and basic laboratory procedures. Successful students will be prepared to complete an internship in a dental office (DENT 766). When students successfully complete DENT 765 and DENT 766, they will be prepared to complete a Radiology Certification course which includes live practice with patients and a written exam (DENT 767). Once students complete this course (DENT 765), DENT 766, the certified exam, and the Radiology Certification course (DENT 767), they will be eligible to receive the Dental Radiology Certificate from the State of California. As a part of this course, students will also receive infection control training and be referred to Basic Life Support CPR training both of which are necessary to work in a dental office and complete DEN 767. This course is the first of three courses which will prepare students to work in the Dental Assistant field. Student Learning Outcomes: - Students will use OSHA infection control standards to prepare patients for treatment in a dental operatory.
- Students will understand the basic anatomy and physiology of the head, neck, and oral cavity and will know elements and abbreviations for medical and dental terminology.
- Students will understand the overall goal of preventive dentistry. They will be able to assist patients in understanding the benefits of preventive dentistry.
- Students will demonstrate knowledge of patient examination procedures, assisting procedures, and equipment use.
DENT 766 Dental Assisting Externship 0.0 unitsDescription: Students will complete 175-hour dental assistant externship in a dental office. They will use the skills they acquired within Fundamentals of Dental Assisting (DENT 765) in a professional setting. Students will be given a list of recommended externship sites and will be responsible for securing their own placement. During the externship, students will meet with the instructor for advising once a week. At least once during the class, the instructor will also visit the student on site. Student who complete this course along with DENT 765 and 767 will be eligible to receive a Dental Assistant Certificate, which demonstrates to future employers their completion of a certified program. PREREQUISITE: DENT 765Student Learning Outcomes: - Students will assist dentist during dental procedures.
- Student will prepare and setup dental operatories for treatment.
- Students will clean and disinfect treatment room using OSHA Guidelines.
- Students will expose dental radiographs on patients.
DENT 767 Dental Radiology Certificate 0.0 unitsDescription: Students will learn about the fundamentals, techniques, and safety standards in order to take diagnosable radiographs. Students will expose dental radiographs on manikins, and pass a state required radiology exam.Under direct approval and release from a dentist, students will bring four patients into the clinical classroom to complete a full mouth radiographic series on them. This course is in compliance with the California Dental Board for x-ray certification. This course in combination with the completion of DENT 765 and the certified radiology exam administered as a part of this course will allow students to receive a Dental Radiology Certificate for the State of California. PREREQUISITE: DENT 765 and DENT 766.Student Learning Outcomes: - Students will demonstrate radiation protection and safety

- Students will demonstrate proper intra-oral techniques and holding devices
- Students will demonstrate procedures necessary for completion of dental radiographic examination for patient diagnosis in compliance with the Dental Practice Act for certification.
