COS 201 Intermediate Cosmetology 12.0 unitsDescription: Extended studies and techniques in tinting, bleaching, permanent waving, soft perming, chemical straightening, pedicuring, waxing, and shaping and styling. PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Cosmetology 200 with a grade of 'C' of better. ADVISORY: Eligible for English 1A and competency at the Intermediate Algebra Level.Student Learning Outcomes: - Perform artificial enhancement on clients nails utilizing safety and disinfection procedures.

COS 202 Advanced Cosmetology 12.0 unitsDescription: Advanced techniques in tinting, lightening, hair design and cosmetic chemistry. PREREQUISITE: Completion of COS 200&201. ADVISORY: Eligible for English 1A and competency at the Intermediate Algebra Level.Student Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate the techniques of hair styling; including perms, weaving and thermal styling.
- Create a facial pack and/or mask based on a customers needs.
- Analyze, select and apply the appropriate hair coloring, based on the clients needs.
- Demonstrate the use of electro therapy and/or light therapy, including safety measures.
COS 203 Practicum 0.5 unitsDescription: Advanced techniques in tinting, lightening, hair and design and cosmetic chemistry. PREREQUISITE: Completion of COS 200, 201 and 202 with a grade of C or better. Student Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate and apply advanced coloring techniques, with proper sanitary maintenance area (SMA) set-up, based on a client's needs.

COS 205 State Board Review 2.0 unitsDescription: State Board exam procedures and standards. ADVISORY: Cosmetology 201.Student Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate all practical training procedures to required state board standards.

COS 207 Contemporary Styling 4.5 unitsDescription: Studies and techniques in braiding, weaving, glass nails, silk wrap, individual lash and brow tinting, corrective make-up and low lights. This is a 6 week class offered in summer session only. PREREQUISITE: Satisfactory completion of Cosmetology 200. Intermediate and Advanced cosmetology enrollments only. ADVISORY: Eligible for English 250, 260, and Mathematics 430. Student Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate advanced hairstyling techniques utilizing a variety of braiding and hair extension applications.
- Demonstrate the proper application of individual and strip false eyelashes, including proper sanitary maintenance set up (SMA).
- Demonstrate the proper coloring techniques for applying low lights and high lights.
COS 220 Scientific Skin Care (Esthetics) 8.0 unitsDescription: An introductory course designed to provide the skills necessary to be employed as an Esthetician (Facialist). Skills taught include skin care and treatment, cosmetics, and the use of electrical modalities. REQUIRED: 17 years of age, completed 10th grade or equivalent, as per State Board of Cosmetology.Student Learning Outcomes: - Develop and perform a course of treatment based on skin analysis.
- Select the proper modalities to give a complete facial, including cosmetics, utilizing the Woods Lamp and various other machines.
- Evaluate and prepare the Sanitary Maintenance Area (SMA) according to state board requirements, based on the clinical service to be performed.
- Describe and explain the fundamentals of thetheory of anatomy as it relates to esthetics.
COS 221 Advanced Scientific Skin Care (Esthetics) 8.0 unitsDescription: An advanced in-depth study and training in the care and treatment of skin, cosmetics and manipulative electrical modalities as required by the State Board of Cosmetology. PREREQUISITE: Completion of COS 220 with a grade of C or better.Student Learning Outcomes: - Analyze pre and post operative care procedures and establish treatment plans for the skin.
- Analyze and perform the application of make up and/or corrective make up according to state board requirements.
- Explain and demonstrate lymphatic node drainage manipulations, including the tools and equipment required, while utilizing proper SMA set up procedures.
COS 223 Independent Study 1.0 unitsDescription: Designed to afford selected students specialized opportunities for exploring areas at the independent study level. The courses may involve extensive library work, research in the community, or special projects. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass. REQUIRED: The study outline prepared by the student and the instructor must be filed with the Department and the Area Dean.Student Learning Outcomes: - Evaluate current cosmetology knowledge and skills, determine areas for improvement, and design a course of action for improvement.
COS 290 Occupational Work Experience/Cosmetology 1.0 unitsDescription: Occupational work experience for students who have a job related to their major. A training plan is developed cooperatively between the employer, college and student. (P/NP grading) 75 hours per semester paid work = 1 unit. 60 hours non-paid (volunteer) work per semester = 1 unit. Student repetition is allowed per Title 5 Section 55253. Minimum 2.00 GPA.
