APE 34 Adapted Aquatic Exercise 0.5 unitsDescription: This course is designed to help individuals who by the nature of their disability such as wheelchair use, back injury, cardiovascular impairment, multiple sclerosis or other disabling condition require a specific aquatic exercise program that will contribute to their physical fitness. May be repeated as necessary based on measurable progress as documented in the Academic Accommodations Plan (AAP). This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass.Student Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate ten (10) specific aquatic warm up exercises.
- Practice five (5) aquatic exercises that enhance/improve cardio-vascular conditioning.
- Identify three (3) major muscles used while doing aquatic exercises.
- Prepare & set up a 20 minute group exercise program using the format used in class.
APE 35 Adapted Swimming for Total Fitness 0.5 unitsDescription: An individualized program of activities designed for students with physical disabilities to improve flexibility and range-of-motion, increase joint movement, improve circulation, and improve control of body movement through water adjustment and activities. May be repeated as necessary based on measurable progress as documented in the AAP (Accessible Accommodation Plan). This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass.Student Learning Outcomes: - Demonstrate three (3) adapted swim strokes.
- Use five (5) aquatic exercises for a period of 20 minutes to show improved cardio conditioning.
- Practice one (1) deep water jogging technique.
- Identify several principles of exercise physiology during adapted swimming.
APE 36 Adapted Physical Education 0.5 unitsDescription: An individualized program of adapted physical education activities designed to meet the needs of students with physical disabilities. Develops an appreciation of physical activity as a regular planned contribution to one's overall fitness. May be repeated as necessary based on measurable progress as documented in the Academic Accommodations Plan. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass.Student Learning Outcomes: - Describe ten (10) warm up and cool down activities.
- Demonstrate the appropriate use of adapted equipment and exercise.
- Employ proper safety procedures specific to adapted equipment use.
- Demonstrate a series of small and large muscle group activities consistent with their individual plan.
APE 38 Adapted Cardiovascular Conditioning and Training 0.5 unitsDescription: An individualized program of adapted exercises in weight training, stretching and cardiovascular conditioning for those individuals who have been disabled through stroke, cardiovascular accident, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or other condition. May be repeated as necessary based on measurable progress as documented in the student's Academic Accommodation Plan (AAP). This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass.Student Learning Outcomes: - Identify three (3) exercises specifically designed for improved cardiovascular conditioning.
- Explain various activities and discuss handouts related to aerobic exercises.
- Demonstrate a 10 minute warm up routine.
- Discuss five (5) safety rules associated with the use of adapted equipment.
APE 47 Adapted Back Fitness units
Description: A course designed for individuals with back injuries. The course is focused on education, motivation and a supervised program designed for self-improvement and prevention for the back's well-being. The course will emphasize a wide variety of stretching and relaxation techniques as well as breathing exercises. This class is not designed to replace physical therapy, but to complement it.
