Instructor: Jo Anne Howell (jhowell@gavilan.edu)
Description: This class is a series of 8 modules designed to help you find and evaluate information about topics covered in your AH3 (Human in the Life Cycle) class.
Objectives:

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize and understand terminology that applies to the storing and retrieval of information.
  2. Distinguish among databases for various formats such as books, periodicals, and online resources.
  3. Design and modify search strategies, and evaluate search results.
  4. Write complete citations in standard APA format.
Course Requirements:

Students will satisfactorily complete:

  • 8 lessons with practice search strategies and evaluation techniques,
  • 8 quizzes on those strategies and techniques.
Grading: The 8 quizzes are each worth 5 points, for a total of 40 points. These will be transferred over to your AH3 instructor to be included in your final grade for that class.
Face-to-Face Sessions

These modules are all accessible online through iLearn. If you need help, you can visit the reference librarian in the Gavilan Library, or you can email me at jhowell@gavilan.edu

Week-by-Week Sessions
  1. Week 1 Browser basics, parts of a website address (URL).
  2. Week 2 Search tools and subject directories.
  3. Week 3 Periodical databases, encyclopedias and books
  4. Week 4 Finding background and current information, evaluating websites.
Attendance Policy

The college policy on attendance, as stated in the catalog is:

"students missing one more class hour than the unit value for a particular course, without making prior arrangements may, at the instructor's option, be dropped without possibility of credit."

Since this is an online course, and we don't have meeting times, the onus is on you. You'll have to show up on the website and finish the quizzes on your own. I strongly urge you to finish them early. If you wait till the last day, your Internet connection will disappear or your computer will crash or your grandmother will have a heart attack.

Occupational/Vocational Statement:

Occupational/Vocational students – Limited English language skills will not be a barrier to admittance to and participation in Vocational Educational Programs.

ADA Accommodation Statement

Students requiring special services or arrangements because of hearing, visual, or other disability should contact their instructor, counselor, or the Disability Resource Center.

Student Honesty Policy Reference Statement

"Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity.   Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for dismissal."
