Information Competency Modules

Syllabus

Title & Times:

Information Competency Modules for AH11 and BIO 11 Classes
CR# 80057, 80058, 80059, and 80060

These modules are completely online. All 8 modules will be open on Wednesday, June 21st. The first 2 modules will close after one week (June 27), the second 2 modules (#3 and #4) will close one week later on July 4th, the third 2 modules will close the next Tuesday, on July 11, and the final 2 modules will close on Tuesday, July 18th. In other words, you should finish at least 2 quizzes every week for the next four weeks. However, since they are all opened on June 21st, you can finish all 8 of them at one time, if you'd like.

These modules are designed to go along with your nutrition (AH11 and BIO 11) class, and will hopefully give you many more opportunities to explore nutrition issues and questions.

Description: This class is a series of 8 modules designed to help you find and evaluate information about topics covered in your AH11 and BIO11 (Nutrition) class.

  3. Design and modify search strategies, and evaluate search results.
  4. Write complete citations in standard APA format.

Face-to-Face Sessions

All modules are accessible online through iLearn. If you need help, you can visit the reference librarian in the Gavilan Library, or you can email me at jhowell@gavilan.edu

Week-by-Week Sessions
  1. Week 1 Evaluating information, Subject Directories.
  2. Week 2 Reading URLs and Search Strategies.
  3. Week 3 Specialized and limited access databases,
  4. Week 4 Encyclopedias, Books, and more current information.
Attendance Policy

The college policy on attendance, as stated in the catalog is:

"students missing one more class hour than the unit value for a particular course, without making prior arrangements may, at the instructor's option, be dropped without possibility of credit."

Since this is an online course, and we don't have meeting times, the onus is on you. You'll have to show up on the website and finish the quizzes on your own. I strongly urge you to finish them early. If you wait till the last day, your Internet connection will disappear or your computer will crash or your grandmother will have a heart attack.

Occupational/Vocational Statement:

Occupational/Vocational students – Limited English language skills will not be a barrier to admittance to and participation in Vocational Educational Programs.

ADA Accommodation Statement

Students requiring special services or arrangements because of hearing, visual, or other disability should contact their instructor, counselor, or the Disability Resource Center.

Student Honesty Policy Reference Statement

"Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity.   Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for dismissal."
