Advisory: ESL 552 and ESL 553 or ESL Assessment Test recommendation. Concurrent enrollment in ESL 562 and 563 is recommended.

 

Course Description: This course is designed to help non-native students mainstream into regular college courses. Its purpose is to prepare for full class participation with emphasis on exposure to and awareness of a variety of instructional formats, note-taking techniques, discussions, and oral presentations.  

 

Course Objectives: At the end of the course, students of ESL 561 will be able to:

  • apply notetaking skills for collegiate courses
  • use variety of strategies to participate orally in mainstream classes
  • demonstrate ability to work collaboratively to make oral presentations
  • recognize and employ collegiate lecture terminology
  • retrieve information using library catalogue
  • summarize through various types of delivery
  • identify cultural differences in education and recognize keys to success in an American college
  • recognize personal strengths and weaknesses, and preferred learning styles

 

Texts and Materials:

Required: Advanced Listening Comprehension 3: Listening and Notetaking Skills, 3rd Ed.by Dunkel, P and Pialorsi, F; Thomson/Heinle

Recommended: a monolingual English dictionary, such as Longman’s Advanced American Dictionary

Materials: - A college ruled notebook for class assignments

 

 

1. Course Requirements:

You are expected to attend every class. Missing over  4 classes for any reason is cause for being dropped. If you miss a class, you are responsible for getting the assignments from another student.

You should make every effort to participate actively in all classroom activities. Class participation will include individual, pairs, and group work related to listening, speaking, and notetaking activities. Your contribution to class activities and being prepared for each class will help your grade.

 

Grading: Your grade will be based on the following:

 

Class attendance and participation: 20%

Individual Speech (Preparation+Presentation): 20%

Group Speech (Preparation+Presentation): 20%

Quizzes: Summarizing, Notetaking: 20%

Final Exam: 20%

 

Total percent: 100%

 

Grading Scale: 90-100 = A; 80-89 = B; 70-79 = C; 60-69 = D; 59 and below = F
