A word about the books:  These books were culled from a much longer list, using a set of criteria that I worked out specifically for this class. First, I wanted the book to be literary in nature, as opposed to an expository or non-fiction book.  Granted, there are two memoirs in the list, so the books aren't technically all fiction, but the literary merits of both books are unquestionable, so they were included.  Additionally, the books I chose aren't part of the canon of "classics" (with the arguable exception of Slaughterhouse-Five), mostly because I felt like presenting something different, something students may not have encountered before in an English class. Lastly, I chose the books because they all have a sense of humor.  You would be surprised at how hard it is to find a literary novel that is also humorous.  I struck several wonderful books from the list because of their shocking lack of humor.

And now, without further ado, I present your book list:

Slaughterhouse-Five

The Glass Castle
Angela's Ashes
White Teeth
