Twain - Huckleberry Finn
Directions:
Read Huck Finn and write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to one of the questions below. Include at least one quote.
- A Child's Voice: Why does Twain make his protagonist a child? What are some of the assumptions that we make about children? In other words, what do we think children are like, what do they need, what is their basic nature, what is important to them, how do they view the world? Does Twain depict these assumptions in a straightforward manner, or does he challenge them somehow? How does Twain use these assumptions to introduce the main themes of the book?
- Great American Novel : Why do you think so many people consider Huck Finn to be the Great American Novel? What events in American history are interwoven in the novel, symbolically or literally? What uniquely American ideals, values and qualities does it portray? What does Twain seem to suggest about what it means to be an American?
