Purpose of Assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is to apply your active listening skills, your knowledge of speech organization, and your knowledge of speech delivery to a specific speech situation. For this assignment, you will choose a speech from a film, TV show, or live context to analyze. You may want to watch the speech more than once (if possible) in order to gather the information needed to write your paper.
Requirements:
You will write a 3-5 page paper (traditionally essay format, double-spaced) responding to the following questions/statements:
- What is the topic of the speech and the source of the speech (film name, TV show name, etc.)?
- What is the purpose of the speech (demonstrate, inform, persuade)
- What type of delivery is the speech (extemporaneous, impromptu, manuscript, memorized)?
- What is the setting/occasion for the speech?
- What are the demographic characteristics of the audience?
- Analyze and discuss the 3 parts of the speaker’s Introduction: Attention Getter, Psychological Orientation, Logical Orientation
- What is the thesis and main points of the speech?
- Analyze and discuss the transitions used throughout the speech.
- Did the speaker cite his/her sources?
- What types of supporting materials (definitions, statistics, examples, testimony) were used?
- Analyze and discuss the 3 parts of the speaker’s Conclusion: Logical Closure, Psychological Closure, Clincher
- Analyze and discuss the speaker’s vocal delivery (tone, pitch, variety, etc.)
- Analyze and discuss the speaker’s physical delivery (movement, facial expressions, gestures, etc.)
- How can you apply this analysis to your own speeches for this class?
- What did you learn about public speaking from this analysis?
