Assignment 7:
Color Correcting Your Off-White Balanced Photos. Use the techniques from chapter 2.

The objective of this exercise is to adjust the contrast and color of two of your worse off-white balanced photos that you used in assignment #6.

Part I, Black and White Correction

  1. Using the techniques from the book (e.g., desaturate, image adjustments/levels, channels) on converting color to B/W, convert the second worst photo to B/W (grey scale). This will be image 1A. Save it.
  2. Use only brightness and contrast to get your best look of the above image 1A (i.e., your measure is your eye). This adjusted photo will be image 1B. Write a brief statement on how you did it.
  3. Again using image 1A (B/W), use the levels and curves with the techniques found in this chapter to bring up shadow detail and insure real blacks and whites. Use the histogram as a measure to help. This will be image 1C. Write a brief statement on how you did it.
  4. Combine the statements and these 3 images (1A, 1B, and 1C) on a page as in the previous exercise. Print this out using Black ink only on good paper and turn in.

Part II, Color Correction.

  1. Your best white balanced color photo will be image 2A.
  2. Use the two "worst white balanced" images (hopefully the same subject for this next part. These will be images 2B and 2C.
  3. Color correct image 2B using only brightness and contrast to get your best look (i.e., your measure is your eye). Write a brief statement on how you did it.
  4. Use Color Balance, Hue/Saturation, and levels adjustments with the techniques found in chapter 2 or 3 to color correct image 2C. Use the histogram as a measure to help. Write a brief statement on how you did it.
  5. Combine the statements and these 3 images (2A: best, 2B: brightness/contrast correction, and 2C: levels and curves correction) on a page as in the previous exercise. Print this out and turn in.

Turn in both these parts with assignment #6 by end of class, October 31.
