The Steps for Making a Movie, Film, or Video (click on the links)

Step 1: Writing the Script

Create an idea whether it be fiction, documentary, or commercial, then write the story. One tells a story no matter what the content.

Write a log line and treatment.

Pitch your idea to anyone who who will listen and perhaps help: studios, producers, agents, GavTV to get funding, or to friends to work for free--well, they get a little excitement, fame, and fortune of course!

Write a script. See this example (in Word format) from The Designer which was made using style sheets in MS Word. You can use software like Final draft that make it even easier.

Step 2: Pre-Production

Buy, rent, borrow, or sell your car to get equipment to make the movie. Or come to Gavilan and use Studio DM equipment. It's really your own.

Scout the environment for good locations. Take still pictures.

Create a storyboard (can use stills from above) and if need be, a Directors script (can be lots of scribbling on the original script).

Get a continuity person and of course a caterer--Sushi sounds good, but no alcohol before the "wrap" is called at the end of the day.

Step 3: Production Hand the scripts to your actors, grab the camera and microphone, and shoot away or let someone else like the cinematographer to do the dirty work.
Step 4: Post-Production

Bring all this tape to a post production facility for editing. Remember, Studio DM is free!

Create or find soundtrack music; record sound effects (Foley); record voice overs, narration, and ADR (automatic dialog replacement).

Composite everything together along with titles/credits (motion graphics).

Step 5: Distribution

Output to tape, author a DVD, and deliver the product on time and for less money! (Wishful thinking.)

Step 6: Accolades

Attend the Oscars as a nominee or get together at a local MacDonalds and cry.

Move to Brentwood or Beverly Hills or rent an apartment in Chino Hills because your house was reposessed.

Create another idea and start the process all over again!
