September 2 Lecture: Introduction to class and Studio DM. Discussion of syllabus, schedule, requirements, and equipment availability/checkout. Examples of student projects. Digital Video basics. Linear non-linear editing. Explanation of project 1.
Lab:
If unfamiliar with the Macintosh, open application just above Trash can.
Assignment
: Get the book and read chapter 1 and 2.
September 9 Lecture: File types including High Definition. Containers vs. Co-Decs. Final Cut Pro: Layout, concepts, and settings for system and caches. Watch The Cutting Edge.

Assignment: Read Chapters 3, 4, & 5.

Lecture: Compression and temporal considerations. File types. Final Cut Pro: editing concepts. Capturing video.

Lecture: Starting to edit. The basic tools for editing in FCP. Installing book files on the DAV drive. Capturing video. Three point editing procedures.
Lab:
Work through chapters 5 and 6. Watch movies in book DVD: Interface, Editing, Customize.
Assignment: Read Chapters 6 and 7. Watch book movies: Trimming and multiclip for next week. Assignment #2: Read this interview with editor, Walter Murch. It is found at http://www.apple.com/pro/profiles/murch/. Write a short 1/2 page commentary on what you read. Turn it in October 5.

Lecture: Camera basics. The art of editing. Editing on the timeline using the Slip, slide, razor blade, roll, and ripple tools. For those with previous experience, you can work on a GavTV edit. Talk to the instructor.
Project #1: Make a video for this video contest--http://www.ed.gov/iamwhatilearn/index.html. This will serve as a substitute for the mid-term exam.
Assignment
: Read chapters 8 & 9. Read Capturing and Setting Up a New Project and this article on WorkFlow.

Lecture: Storyboard template is here for download. Adding transitions using opacity. Exporting file to DV format. Creative use of transitions. Using transitions and setting parameters. Mid Term Exam

Lecture: Basic audio. Using the text generator for titles. Design principles for text on screen. Font types (serif and sans-serif), drop shadows, size, color, and broadcast concerns.
Lab:
Work Chapters 12 and 13.
Assignment
: Study for exam on the 28th.

November 2, 4 Lecture: Final Project discussion. Using Motion effects, keyframes, and tweening. Moving still images. Techniques for fast and slow motion--when to use to enhance realism or emotional value.
Lab:
Continue work on Chapters 12 and 13.
Assignment: Make a short treatment for final project, due 9/9.
