Course:

CD 14A:   Working With School-Age Children, 3 units,

Instructor:

Dr. Marlene Bumgarner

Please send me an email: mbumgarner@gavilan.edu  with CD14A as the subject to let me know that you have read this page.  I will send you the course guide by email a few days before class begins.

This class will be taught entirely on the internet. There will, however, be opportunities to screen videos and review material with the concurrent face-to-face class, which meets on Tuesday nights.

Office hours are by appointment: To make an appointment call 408.848.4805, leave a detailed voicemail and send me an email alerting me to check messages.

This course is being offered as part of Gavilan College's Child Development & Educational Studies major. It may be used toward an Associate Degree or a Certificate of Completion in School Age.  The class also may be used toward a Child Development Permit or for CDTC or CARES stipends.

Students will be required to the read the text, online lecture modules, and linked articles, as well as to participate in timely and meaningful weekly online discussions (asynchronous).  Students will be evaluated on their online participation, observation of "live" children, written assignments, and online examinations. Extra credit may be earned by participating in one or more school-age conferences or workshops.

Course
Description:

Students completing CD14A will learn the developmental characteristics of school aged children, issues relating to before- and after-school programs for children from kindergarten to grade eight, and specific details of administering and leading such a programs.  Other topics include recreation versus academic enrichment, staffing requirements, age groupings, program content, and community resources.

This class has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit.

Special Note:

Many students begin online classes, but few complete them successfully without basic computer skills and personal discipline. The Gavilan Library will offer several orientations to online courses during the first weeks of the semester. If you have never taken an online course using Moodle, this orientation will provide critical information to help you be successful in this class.  In addition to orientations on campus, a free online tutorial is available that teaches students how to log in to their classes, upload assignments, and more.  To participate, register for LIB 732.
