Orientation to Online Education

Course:

CD 3 and PSYC 3:   Child Development During the School Years, 3 units,

Instructor:

Dr. Marlene Bumgarner

Please send me an email: mbumgarner@gavilan.edu  with CD3 or PSYC3 as the Subject to let me know that you have read this page.  I will send you the course guide by return email a few days before class begins.

This class will be taught entirely on the internet.

Office hours by appointment: (408) 848-4805 (leave detailed message on recorder and send me an email to tell me you have left a voicemail).

This course is offered as part of Gavilan College's Child Development major programs for a Certificate of Completion in School Age Care or an Associate Degree in Child Development.  It also meets a Social Science lower division general education requirement for the California State University.

Students will be required to the read the text, online lecture modules, and linked articles, as well as to participate in timely and meaningful weekly online discussions (asynchronous).  Students will be evaluated on their online participation, written assignments using APA citation format, and online examinations.

Course
Description:

A systematic study of the child from age 6 to 18.  The course integrates the basic concepts of physical, cognitive and psychosocial development at each major stage of life during this period. This course is listed both as CD 3 and PSYC 3.   ( Please note:  Because this class meets a lower division general education requirement for the B.A. degree at CSU, the reading level of the text and accompanying professional articles, as well as the expected caliber of student writing assignments, are comparable to those at the four year institution.)

Special Note:

Many students begin online classes, but few complete them successfully without basic computer skills and personal discipline. The Gavilan Library will offer several orientations to online courses during the first weeks of the semester. If you have never taken an online course, this orientation will provide critical information to help you be successful in this class.  In addition to orientations on campus, a free online tutorial is available that teaches students how to log in to their classes, upload assignments, and more.  To participate, register for LIB 732. For more details, see the Distance Education web site, http://www.gavilan.edu/disted/.

Special

  1. Students requiring special services or arrangements because of hearing, visual or other disability should contact their instructor, counselor, advisor, or the Disabled Students Services.
  2. Limited English language skills will not be a barrier to admittance to and participation in vocational programs.
  3. Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity.   Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for dismissal.
  4. The college policy on attendance, as stated in the catalog is: "students missing one more class hour than the unit value for a particular course, without making prior arrangements may, at the instructor's option be dropped without possibility of credit."  (This means you are expected to spend just as many hours in your “virtual” classroom as in a regular, face-to-face, classroom.)
  5. However, although I may assume that you are no longer attending our class and remove you from the online roster, do not assume that I have filed an official withdrawal with Admissions & Records.  That is your responsibility.
