Welcome! I am very much looking forward to facilitating your learning experience this summer. Fostering the optimum growth and development of children is my passion, and I hope it will soon become yours as well. Plan to do very little else, however, during this summer session, as you will need to spend 54 hours in our virtual classroom and approximately twice that reading the text and preparing assignments. Three units in six weeks is a very fast ride!

This class will be taught entirely on the internet.

This course is offered as part of Gavilan College's Child Development major programs for a Certificate of Completion in School Age Care or an Associate Degree in Child Development or Liberal Studies/Elementary Education. It also meets a Social Science lower division general education requirement for the Associate Degree or the California State University Breadth Pattern.

Students will be required to the read the textbook, online lecture modules, and linked articles, as well as to participate in weekly online discussions (asynchronous). Students will be evaluated on their online participation, written assignments, and online examinations.

All students are encouraged to attend an online or live orientation to Moodle, the software used for the online classes at Gavilan College. Information about these orientations can be found on the main Distance Education web site,


Continuation of the study of the principles of child development with emphasis on children from six years through adolescence. Includes developmental theories, typical and atypical development, and topics relevant to those ages. This course is listed both as CD 3 and PSYC 3, and has the option of a letter grade or credit/no credit.

You will need a textbook the first week of class.

You may obtain the text from the Gavilan College Bookstore, There is a bookstore link on the Gavilan Home Page under Student Services. Note the bookstore hours (or email the manager to ask for the current semester hours). Scroll down to Visit Gavilan Online Bookstore, click, then select Textbooks which is just under the Gavilan logo. Select the correct term, department, course and section number, and the text will be listed there with the price. At that point you can order the book online, or close the website and drive to the bookstore and purchase it directly.

There are also many online bookstores that sell textbooks at reduced prices. Be sure to purchase the most recent edition of the text.

Since this is a very intensive class, with a great deal of material to cover in a short amount of time, students will be expected to log in several times a week. Ideally, you will spend from 1 - 3 hours on Monday reviewing the written assignments, online resources, forum posts, and quizzes for the week, and then log in at least twice more by Saturday night. (Many students log in every day.) In order to earn maximum points on forum discussion participation, your initial post should be made no later than Wednesday, followed by at least two responses to student posts by Saturday. All forum posts and written assignments must be in standard English (no textspeak please), free of grammatical, spelling and punctution errors. In-text and end of assignment reference citations should be in APA format - every answer must be cited in the body of the text with a page number showing the source of the information.

At the end of this course, students are expected to be able to do the following:

1. Analyze major developmental milestones for children from middle childhood through early adolescence, ages 6-18.

2. Analyze the biopsychosocial approach to the study of human behavior and development in children.

3. Compare, contrast and relate developmental theories to the study of children.

4. Analyze valid and ethical methods of research and apply them to theories of child development.

5. Apply theory, research and knowledge of child development to communicate with parents and children in a positive way as they facial social, contemporary issues together.



Final course grades consist of a percentage of the total points accumulated -- a possible 100 points.

  3. Students are expected to exercise academic honesty and integrity.   Violations such as cheating and plagiarism will result in disciplinary action which may include recommendation for dismissal.
  4. The college policy on attendance, as stated in the catalog is: "students missing one more class hour than the unit value for a particular course, without making prior arrangements may, at the instructor's option be dropped without possibility of credit." (You can expect to spend just as many hours in your “virtual” classroom as in a regular, face-to-face, classroom.)
