Mission: The Learning and Loving Education Center was established to hospitably teach skills, foster hopes, and provide direction to marginalized immigrant students who are limited by illiteracy, poverty, and lack of access to educational opportunities and services to improve their lives and the lives of their families. Our programs teach skills that assist underserved populations in overcoming the multiple barriers to education, literacy, employment and self-reliance.
Activities: English classes, computer classes, parenting and skills classes with paid, credentialed teachers. Counseling. Information and referrals to other agencies. Sharing room with donated clothes, household items, furniture. Some health services, preschool and child care services to clients' children. Incubated EcoCare housecleaning cooperative; may start cottage craft boutique.
Needs/Projects this semester: mini-classes or workshops on fitness, dance, sewing, money management, music, computers, health, sexuality, and/or other interests; oral histories; current events discussion group; fundraising events participation; information and referral work; art or music groups; follow-up after clients have moved on to see what other needs they have, assess satisfaction with services. Consumer education, consumer advocacy; aid in classrooms with English or other skills under teachers' supervision.
Who should apply: personable, hospitable female students who appreciate contributions made by immigrants; students who can work with clients who are learning English or may have special needs.
Don’t apply if: you have negative feelings about immigrants. Because of the preferences of many immigrant popluations being served, male students are unlikely to be chosen for work with clients at this agency.
