CSIS 54 - Perl Programming -- Fall 2008DON'T MISS THIS ONE!The Fall 2008 Introduction to Perl Programming class promises to be a great learning experience. Perl (Practical Extraction and Reporting Language) is an interpreted language that has been around since the 1980's. The language has become a favorite with system administrators because there are versions that will run on most any platform and it is a very powerful file manipulation program and works well to control system processes. And, it's pretty fast. You will learn the language thoroughly and will write applications using file I/O, regular expressions and sophisticated program flow control that protects users from themselves. I'll also teach you how to use Perl with MySQL, a powerful and free database manager. Why, you'll have your momma's recipe files all organized on your computer before you know it! (just kidding). Perl and MySQL are used extensively on the web for applications using forms and data. Probably the best part is that Perl is not a difficult language to learn or use. That's another reason for its popularity (besides being free). This is going to be a hybrid class. We will have regular, weekly class meetings in Morgan Hill. Quizzes and some assignments will be done online so we don't take away from valuable class time. There is a brand new, 5th edition of the text. However, I will be teaching from the 4th Edition of "Learning Perl" by Schwartz, Phoenix and dFoy, published by O'Reilly, ISBN-10: 0-596-10105-8 / ISBN-13: 9787-0-596-10105-3. The text is available through the Gavilan Bookstore or online at Amazon.com. To SAVE MONEY, you can use the 3rd Edition of "Learning Perl" as well. Feel free to look online for a new or used 3rd edition. Trust me.... you won't miss a thing! | |
