Course Description:
Introduction to the online classes and student services at Gavilan College. This course will show students how to log into their online courses, find lectures, assignments and exams, take part in online class discussions, submit attachments, and view their grades. The course will also cover all the online student services available to the distant student, including counseling, library resources, records and grades, financial aid, tutoring and technical support.

Dates and Times:
This class is completely online. It is available every semester. You may register and join the class at any time, complete the lessons that address the problems you're having, or do the lessons in order, from 1 through 16. This is a non-credit class, free to everyone, designed to help students navigate the online classroom, and be aware of the many online resources available to them.

Steps to Log Into the Class:

In order to log into your online course, you must be registered for the class. Allow 6 hours from the time you register for your name and user i.d. to be uploaded to the class roster.

Follow this formula for creating your User I.D.:
  1. Your username is:

lastname + last 4 SSN digits

  1. The default password is:

changeme

  1. Are you getting denied because of cookies? This is something you'll have to change in your browser's preferences.
  1. If you've changed the default password (you will) and subsequently forgotten it, we'll email it to you.

Creating your Password:

Once you are successfully logged into the class and are setting up your new password, keep these simple rules in mind. You'll find it easier to remember your password if you:

 
  • Keep the letters either all lower case, or all capitals. Use monkey or MONKEY, but don't use Monkey.
  • Use a word that you can remember easily (your dog's name, the month of your birthday, your mother's name), but that is not easily guessed by your enemies. Don't use your own name.
  • For extra security, you could change all o's to zeros, or all i's to the number one. rover would become r0ver, and lizzie would be l1zz1e.

If you can't log in:

If you've never been able to get into your class
If you are following the formula for logging in, and still can't get in, it could be that you registered late and haven't yet been entered into the system, or that you are entered into our system with a variation in your name.

Please do not keep trying to log in until you are crazy with frustration. The problem may be simply that we have your name entered with a different spelling. Follow these steps:

  • Call the distance learning coordinator at (408) 848-4885, or email him at disted@gavilan.edu -- he will have access to your online course and will be able to see if (and how) your name is entered into the class.

    If you got in once but have never been able to get back...
    When you first logged in, you were asked to create your password. You are probably now entering this password with a slight variation in spelling or capitalization.

    Please do not keep trying to log in until you are crazy with frustration. The problem may be simply that you've misspelled the password.

    E-mail the distance learning coordinator at once, at disted@gavilan.edu. He can find your password and tell you what it is.
