Advisory This course is intended for students with a verified disability who show a need for the use of adaptive computer programs and/or equipment or demonstrated academic deficit.
 
Description This course is an Assistive Computer Technology Lab designed for students who are eligible for Disability Services. The course is designed to improve basic academic skills and/or cognitive processes through the use of appropriate software or to learn assistive devices designed to make computers accessible. Course content is based on student educational contracts that are developed for each student.
 
Learning Outcomes

1. Students will demonstrate increased knowledge and skills in the academic courses or assistive technologies specified in their Student Educational Contract.
2. Students will be able to identify and apply assistive technologies or academic software that are appropriate for their individual learning profiles.
3. Students will be able to analyze the effects of the assistive technologies or academic software on their academic achievement.
4. Students will be able to identify appropriate assistive technologies and apply them to the completion of their mainstreamed college courses.
5. Students will demonstrate increased proficiency in basic academic and/or computer skills and/or assistive computer technologies.

 
Course Requirements

The course content is individualized. Students work on specific objectives that are specified on their Student Educational Contracts.

1. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY - Log-in and log-out on the attendance computer whenever you enter and exit the lab. You are required to work in the lab 3 hours a week for each unit you earn.The lab is open on Mondays-9am-2:30pm, Tuesdays/Thursdays-9am-4pm, and Wednesdays/Fridays-9am-3pm. (Lab is closed Monday & Wednesday from 12:50-2:10pm). If you miss more than 4 hours per unit enrolled, you may be dropped from the course. If you do not complete your hour requirement by the end of the semester, you will not receive credit for the course.

2. DO NOT ENROLL in the lab if you do not need the direct assistance of a staff member. CSIS 571 is designed to offer students supplemental instruction in their areas of need utilizing the computer. If you do not need direct support, do not register in the lab. You may not use the computers independently in the lab area or library as the sole means of earning your unit(s). Please schedule an appointment if you have any concerns.

3. You are expected to demonstrate measurable progress on your Student Educational Contract. Your progress will be monitored throughout the semester.
