Note about VISTA, Office 2007

The Gavilan Spanish programs included on the Gavilan Spanish Review CD (Gaspar, Dictionary, etc.) are tested and supported on the version of Microsoft Windows currently installed at the College, specifically Windows XP and Office 2003.

At present, Gavilan College has no plans to upgrade to Windows VISTA and Office 2007.

This significantly limits our ability to test and support our software on these new versions.

32-bit Vista

To the best of our knowledge, Gaspar and the Dictionary work on 32-bit VISTA.
The Dictionary works with Microsoft Office or Word 2003 running on 32-bit VISTA.
The Dictionary can be connected to the Office 2007 version of Word, but the method to connect and the interface differs from earlier versions of Office, both on XP and on 32-bit VISTA.

64-bit Vista

To the best of our knowledge, Gaspar works on 64-bit VISTA.
The Dictionary does not work on 64-bit VISTA.
The lack of support for the Dictionary may not be a significant loss to students, since all versions of Office and Word supported on 64-bit Vista include Spanish spell check and Spanish↔English translation.

Virtual PC Alternative: In response to the increased availability and popularity of 64 bit Vista systems we offer a Virtual PC version of Windows XP SP2 which can be installed on 64 bit Vista systems - check with your instructor.

(03/29/2009) Error accessing HELP files (VISTA systems only)

Microsoft no longer includes support for old-style Help (files with the .hlp extension) with Vista. If you have problems displaying Help for Gaspar or Dictionary, install the update for your version of Vista:

32-bit Vista Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu

64-bit Vista Windows6.0-KB917607-x64.msu

(03/29/2009) Error installing Gaspar on 64-bit VISTA systems

The 64-bit versions of Vista do not support the installation of programs from the old Gaspar CD (with a Copyright date of 2007 or earlier).

Gaspar can be installed with the new install setup available here
(Warning - this is a big file - 73MB)

(09/14/2007) Error connecting Dictionary to Office 2007

This occurs both on XP and on Vista/ When the user opens the MsWord_Readme document on the CD and clicks on Connect, the program reports an error and stops.
The toolbar buttons to access the Dictionary, Thesaurus and Accents are missing or inactive.

The problem can be corrected by applying the Office patch available here

The patch must be applied from the user ID which is trying to Connect the Dictionary to Office 2007
When prompted, select Open or Run, do not select Save
Then Open the file MsWord 2007.doc

If you receive a Security Warning: Macros have been disabled, click Options to enable

(09/07/2007) Error accessing PDOXUSRS.NET (VISTA systems only)

This occurs on Vista machines with multiple users defined - after Gaspar has been installed by the Administrator user ID, when a different user with less privileges attempts to run the application.

The problem can be avoided by running Gaspar from the same Administrator ID which installed the program, or by applying the Vista patch available here

(01/31/2003) Missing lessons in SPAN1B, SPAN8B (XP systems only)

They are not really missing - but because Windows XP sorts blank spaces differently than earlier versions, lessons 8 and 9 are listed at the end, instead of at the beginning, before lesson 10.
In the Select window, just move the slider to the right to find them!
(If it really bothers you, click here to download a program to change 8 to 08, etc.)
(Update 01/01/04) Fixed in the current version 2.20

(01/31/2003) Messed-up accents on Así Es CD (XP systems only)

The Introductory Spanish Multimedia CD included with the Así Es textbook, 3rd Edition, displays some pages with incorrect accents. The video and audio parts are fine, but the text panels may have strange characters in place of some accents.
The Publisher is aware of the problem and is "working on a fix"...
(Update 07/01/04) Así Es, 4th Edition CD works fine on all systems; no fix for 3rd Ed...
