Journal #8

Purpose: to reflect on memories of times past

Introduction:  In his essay Once More to the Lake, E.B. White writes nostalgically of a place he remembers from childhood. What childhood memories make you feel nostalgic?

Directions

Note: The journals are intended to be a way for you to explore ideas that you might later wish to refine in a paper or a discussion.  I will not censor these journals in any way, nor will I grade them on content or grammar (though, like the seminars, they must be coherent and display some measure of critical thinking about the question at hand). You do not have to answer all the questions, nor do you have to confine yourself to these questions. Write about whatever is on your mind.

Read E.B. White's Once More to the Lake. Think about your own childhood and write a page or two about some good memory or memories that you still think about sometimes.

Some Questions/Topics to Consider:

  • Can you think of a place that you vacationed as a child, and have taken your children, or plan to take them someday, or would take them if you were ever to have children? What details stand out in your memory?
  • What traditions in your family do you carry on now, or plan to carry on with your own family, if you should have one someday?.
  • What people/places/things/events from your childhood do you find yourself getting nostalgic about? Have you ever been able to revisit them as an adult? What was the experience like?
