English 1A
Journal #2

Purpose: to generate ideas for the process analysis essay, to examine one's writing process critically with the goal of improving efficiency and depth of ideas.

Directions

Note: The journals are intended to be a way for you to explore ideas that you might later wish to refine in a paper or a discussion.  I will not censor these journals in any way, nor will I grade them on content or grammar (though, like the seminars, they must be coherent and display some measure of critical thinking about the question at hand). You do not have to answer all the questions, nor do you have to confine yourself to these questions. Write about whatever is on your mind.

Write a page or two about the upcoming process analysis essay.
Some questions to consider

  • What kind of writer are you?
  • How would you describe your current attitude toward writing?
  • What kinds of experiences have you had with writing, and how have those experiences influenced your current attitude?
  • Are there certain types of writing that you enjoy and would do for fun, even if it wasn't attached to an assignment?
  • Are there certain types of writing that you hate and will do anything to avoid?
  • Do you follow the writing process outlined in the sections for Module 2 (including the Lamott essay), or do you have another approach that you use?
  • How has your approach worked for you in the past?
  • Do you expect to continue writing the same way you always have? Or do you have hopes or plans to change the way you write?
  • What are some of your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to writing?
  • What do you still want to know about writing?
  • How do you think (or hope) this class might help you with your writing goals?
