English 2F - Children's Literature
Seminar 4 - The Influence of Children's Literature (among other media)

Directions:

Think about these questions

  1. How many factors influence a child's perspective, attitudes, values and behavior? Where does literature fit into that pantheon of influential factors?
  2. How do children interpret the images and texts that they see? What do we know about what children take away from the lit they read and have read to them? How much do you think these texts (as well as other media such as film, TV and internet) influence the way children view themselves, their families and friends, and the world?
  3. How do/should we choose literature (or sanction other types of media in our homes, schools and/or communities) for our youngest, most impressionable children? What sorts of things should we look for in quality picture books, or other media?
  4. What do you think about how literature is marketed to our youngest children? What about films, television and other media directed at the youngest among us? What should parents, teachers, relatives, caregivers and concerned citizens be on the lookout for as we help our youngest children navigate through the confusing maze of pop culture and the media?

Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to one or more of those questions. Include some examples of remembered stories, books, films, TV shows, videos, internet media and commercials from your own childhood, and how you think those media influenced you. You might wish to compare and contrast the various ways that the media influence children today vs. when you were a child.

Post your paragraph using the "New Topic" button.  Initial postings will be due by Mon, Sept. 15 at midnight.

Respond to at least two of your classmates' paragraphs.  When you respond, do add something to the discussion. Don't just say "I agree" or "disagree".  Give specific reasons why you feel the way you do, examples from your own childhood or observations, and other evidence. Responses are due by midnight Mon, Sept. 22.
