English 2F - Historical Fiction
Seminar 9 -Number the Stars

Directions:

Think about these questions.

  1. What do you consider the role of historical fiction to be in the education of school-age children?
  2. What historical fiction books would you recommend? Discuss what made those books stand out in the genre. What constitutes 'good' historical fiction, in your opinion?
  3. What does Lowry suggest about what children are capable of handling, as readers and as the characters in the book? Do you agree with her assessment?
  4. How might a teacher or parent use this book to begin discussions about sensitive issues like genocide, racism and the nature of good and evil? What do you think children of this age (3rd and 4th graders - the intended audience for this book) should know about themes contained in books like Number the Stars, and others that take up the dark periods of human history? What, if anything, should be kept from them?

Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to one or more of those questions. Note: You don't have to respond to all these questions. You are free to, of course, but you might also pick a few to focus on, or even just one.

Post your paragraph using the "New Topic" button.  Initial postings will be due by Monday, 10/20 at midnight.

Respond to at least two of your classmates' paragraphs.  When you respond, do add something to the discussion. Don't just say "I agree" or "disagree".  Give specific reasons why you feel the way you do, examples from your own childhood or observations, and other evidence. Responses are due by midnight Monday 10/27.
