Response #6 -Out of My Mind

Purpose: To analyze the elements of contemporary realism, to identify the potential responses of children to the book, to interpret a work according to the principles of historical and sociocultural theory

Directions

Note: The responses are intended to be a way for you to explore ideas that you might later wish to refine in a paper or a discussion.  I will not censor these responses in any way, nor will I grade them on content or grammar (though, like the seminars, they must be coherent and display some measure of critical thinking about the question at hand). You do not have to answer all the questions, nor do you have to confine yourself to these questions.  You can write as much as you want, as long as you meet the minimum length requirements for the assignment

What does Draper suggest about how adults view children, and how do you think she feels about the way children are treated in our culture? What does she suggest about what children, no matter what their abilities, need in order to thrive and develop?
3. The Nature of Education : Discuss the portrayal of the education system in the book, both mainstream and special ed. What does Draper suggest children need in order to become educated? How do you think she feels about the way we go about it now?
4.The Nature of Morality and Friendship: What does Lowry suggest about what it takes to be a moral person and a good friend? What character traits are rewarded and which are punished in the book?
