Seminar #12
The Phantom Tollbooth

Directions:

Think about these questions, in light of the material you read in Module 6 about fantasy.

  1. How does Juster play around with language in this book? Do the linguistic acrobatics add to the enjoyment of the book, or detract? How might an adult audience react differently to the word play than a child?
  2. What do you think Juster is suggesting about the nature of boredom and imagination? How relevant are his suggestions to a modern-day audience, who are not used to being bored and who typically expect entertainment 24/7?
  3. What messages is Juster sending his audience about consumerism and materialism? Do you think those messages still hold up?
  4. What do you think Juster is suggesting about the nature of learning? Does he seem to think that 'book learning' is different from 'life learning'? What does he seem to suggest about the way we educate children in our culture, and what we consider important priorities when it comes to educating children?

Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to one or more of those questions.

Post your paragraph using the "New Topic" button.  Postings will be due by Monday, 11/15 at midnight.

Respond to at least two of your classmates' paragraphs.  When you respond, do add something to the discussion. Don't just say "I agree" or "disagree".  Give specific reasons why you feel the way you do, examples from your own childhood or observations, and other evidence. Responses are due by midnight Monday, 11/22.
