Seminar #12
Charlotte's Web

Directions:

Think about these questions, in light of the material you read in Module 6 about fantasy.

  1. How does White play around with language in this book? Do the linguistic acrobatics add to the enjoyment of the book, or detract? How might an adult audience react differently to the word play than a child?
  2. How would you describe the society of the barnyard? How does it mirror what we might see in mid-20th century American culture? Do you think there are any particular areas of American culture that White seems to be mocking or that he disagrees with?
  3. What messages is White sending his audience about what it means to grow up? What are some of the benefits and drawbacks of growing up? What do you think White suggests about what it means to be a kid in this culture, and what it means to be a grown-up? Do you think he agrees with our culture's expectations for children and adults?
  4. What kind of community do the farm animals have? What does White seem to be suggesting about our need for community, and about how we respond (or should respond) when one of our community is endangered?

Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to one or more of those questions.

Post your paragraph using the "New Topic" button.  Postings will be due by Monday, 11/12 at midnight.

Respond to at least two of your classmates' paragraphs.  When you respond, do add something to the discussion. Don't just say "I agree" or "disagree".  Give specific reasons why you feel the way you do, examples from your own childhood or observations, and other evidence. Responses are due by midnight Monday, 11/19.
