English 2F Discussion #8 Directions: Think about these questions. 1. In some ways, this is a coming-of-age novel, also called Bildungsroman (literally, a novel of formation or development) in literature circles. What does Jess learn about life as the book progresses? You could discuss the frightening and disappointing aspects of life as well as the joyous discoveries. 2. Describe the dynamics in the Aarons household. What kind of family are they? What are their values, and how do they pass those values along to their children? 3. What is the family's attitude about education? How do they express that attitude? Do different family members feel differently about education? 4. In this novel, the children keep secrets from adults and vice versa. Name some of the secrets and half-truths, and discuss why you think they keep things from each other. Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to one or more of those questions. Post your paragraph using the "New Topic" button. Postings will be due by Tuesday, April 1 at midnight. Respond to at least two of your classmates' paragraphs. When you respond, do add something to the discussion. Don't just say "I agree" or "disagree".
