Discussion #12
The Giver

Directions:

Think about these questions.

1.  Your Reaction: What comes up for you as you read the book? What are your reactions to the events and characters of the book, and what in your background, culture or value system influences that reaction? What parellels can you see between the book and your own world? Is there anything in the book that would make you question its appropriateness for the intended audience?

2. Others' Reaction: Why do you think this book is so often banned or challenged? What do the challengers fear will happen if children or teens read a book like this? How would you respond to those fears? Do you think there are times when banning a book is warranted? Why or why not?

Write a brief (1-2 paragraph) response to one or more of those questions.

Post your paragraph using the "New Topic" button.  Postings will be due by Thurs, Nov. 30 at midnight.

Respond to at least two of your classmates' paragraphs.  When you respond, do add something to the discussion. Don't just say "I agree" or "disagree".  Give specific reasons why you feel the way you do, examples from your own childhood or observations, and other evidence. Responses are due by midnight Sun, Dec 3.
