Seminar #7 – Cold Mountain, Character Development

Directions:  Choose two characters from the book and trace their development.  Write a brief (1-3 paragraph) study for each character, using specific examples and quotes from the novel to illustrate your ideas.

Questions to consider:

1. What is this character like at his or her core? What are the basic traits, values and personality embodied by this character?
2. How does the character react to the circumstances of his or her life, and to other people in their orbit?  How do this character’s reactions to certain events, and interactions with other characters, reveal something about their nature?
3. How does the character change throughout the book?
