1A - Seminar #8
Frank McCourt, Angela's Ashes, Chapters 2-6 (20 points)
Note: Your seminar grade will
be determined by the quantity of your responses (how many questions you
answer and how many other students you respond to) and the quality (how
well you demonstrate an understanding of the ideas you're responding to,
how detailed your responses are, how coherent and in-depth they are, etc.)
Directions:
1. Read the chapters listed above.
2. Answer one of the following questions with a short (3-5 paragraph) mini-essay. Include quotes and specific references to the text
in your answers. Submit your response to the Assignment Chamber
(you can either type the responses out beforehand and copy and paste them
into the chamber, or just type them directly into the chamber) .

1. How does McCourt use humor in the book? What effective does his use of humor have on the reader? Would you call this book funny? Why or why not?

| 2. Which incidents in the book strike you as particularly vivid? Are the incidents believable, or did you at any point think McCourt might have been exaggerating? How much does it matter whether or not this is a "true" story? |
3. How does Frank acclimate when he moves from America to Ireland? What are the differences between the two cultures? Does he feel at home in Limerick? Why or why not?

| 4. Why does McCourt include so much of Irish history, including songs and stories, in his memoir? What influence did these stories and songs have on him in childhood? What effect does the inclusion of these stories and songs have on the reader? |
