English 1A - Seminar #1

Frank McCourt, Angela's Ashes, Chapter 1   (20 points)

Note:  Your seminar grade will be determined by the quantity of your responses (how many questions you answer and how many other students you respond to) and the quality (how well you demonstrate an understanding of the ideas you're responding to, how detailed your responses are, how coherent and in-depth they are, etc.)


1.  Read the chapter listed above.

2. Answer one of the following questions briefly, about 1 paragraph per response. Include quotes and specific references to the text in your answers.  You can submit as an attachment (recommended) or type the response directly into the submission box (SAVE FREQUENTLY!)
Choose one:

1.  How does McCourt tell the story of his own birth and infancy? Why do you think he did it this way?

2.  How does Frank feel about his father? Do his feelings change at all throughout the first chapter, or do they remain constant?

3.  How does Frank cope with the horrors of his childhood? What are some ways he makes it bearable?

4.  Why is the story of Cuchulain significant to Frank? What does it mean to him, and why is he so protective of it?

3.  Post your response to the Discussion chamber of the website .

4.  Read all other students' posts.

5. Respond to at least two other student's post (more is better) .  You will have until midnight, Sunday, June 25to read and respond to the other students' ideas.
